NAVARA STEERING PERFECTION

Rancho Suspension has released the RS5000 Heavy Duty Steering Damper to suit the Nissan Navara D22. A Rancho Steering Damper will increase vehicle control under all driving conditions by reducing steering shimmy and therefore driver fatigue.

TOO LONG IN THE BUSH

Since its release a few months ago, the 4-door version of the all-new JK Jeep Wrangler has sold like hot chips at a winter footy match. In the USA, even Jeep’s marketing people are amazed at the positive reaction shown by Jeep enthusiasts for the ‘people-carrying’ model. We guess they could be kicking themselves - for not building a 4-door when the TJ was introduced way back in 1996.

Since then, a few body-building companies have added extra doors to very small quantities of the long-wheelbase TJ Wrangler.

Not content with just four doors, one Jeeper shelled out the extra for six of the things. It could be a bit of pose in the city, but we reckon it would be a one-way trip off the road.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

A new magazine went on sale in North America this year. Named ‘Overland Journal’, the publication is aimed at people who use vehicles for long-distance touring and/or exploration to remote destinations, and shorter trips to escape the madding crowd.

Unlike Australian 4WD magazines, Overland Journal doesn’t carry stories about radical suspension modifications, engine enhancements, off-road competition or how many tinnies were emptied at the campsite. The emphasis is on adventure, discovery, self-reliance and having proper regard for the environment. Sort of a ‘National Geographic on wheels’.

With just 100 pages and only five issues a year, Overland Journal’s subscription fee of USD75 (including airmail) may seem too expensive. But you will get extremely well-written stories, great photo spreads, and a real appreciation of the incredible places around the world just waiting to be explored.

A REAL WARRANTY

RANCHO did not become the world’s best-selling 4WD performance shock absorber by accident. They got to the top of the tree by offering an unmatchable combination of design features, quality engineering, long-term durability, value for money and great on-ride and off-road performance.

It is easy to become confused about the merits of the many shock absorber ‘brands’. Almost every business marketing shocks seems to claim that the type they are selling is the best thing since sliced bread. The real truth is that the many of these ‘brands’ are just generic shocks - with unique decals stuck on the tube.

RANCHO started building, and modifying, 4WD suspensions way back in 1955. Today, the company manufactures 2.5 million 4WD and light truck shocks are year. That’s 10,000 shock absorbers coming off the production line every day!

4WD1 has been a RANCHO distributor since 1990; so we know how well they perform and the customer satisfaction they create. It is not unusual to speak to 4WD owners who are still riding on RANCHOs they bought from us more than ten years ago.

Having the best-quality 4WD shock absorbers also allows us to offer the best warranty: 3Years/Unlimited kms* Plus, if a shock fails due to a manufacturing defect, we are happy to bear the cost of delivering a new replacement, by priority post of freight, to anywhere in Australia.

*Excludes non-specified fitments or use in competitive events

QUICKLIFT

Our first shipment of the all-new Rancho QuickLift range will arrive next week.

If you own a current-model Hilux or Prado, the QuickLift units really live up to their name. Raising the front end without the need for replacement coils. This means you retain the original ride quality, get increased ride-height (with more room for larger tyres) and don't break the bank in the process.

The new QuickLift struts feature Rancho's famous ride-adjustment technology. This is achieved via a 9-position external knob, or the optional In-Cab system.

A CASE OF THE BENDS

A Prado-owning friend of ours received a letter from Toyota the other day.

The letter advised that Toyota had announced a Safety Recall Campaign back in June 2006; and his vehicle had yet to be rectified.

Our friend doesn’t remember receiving a notice from Toyota in 2006, and was quite startled when he read the contents of the letter. Especially the following paragraph:

“We are contacting you to advise that there is a possibility that on certain Prado 95 series vehicles, if operated under severe driving conditions, such as repeated high speed driving on winding mountain roads, damage could develop in the rear axle shaft. If a crack occurs and the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the crack may expand and in the worst case, the axle may fracture and the axle shaft flange and wheel assembly may separate from the shaft.”

What this means is that the rear wheel actually falls off the vehicle. Hopefully, not on a mountain bend beside a steep drop!

Toyota further advised that the owner should, “present your vehicle to have the rear axle shafts replaced without further delay.”

If you have a 1996 to 2003 Prado, and you haven’t received a recall notice, it would be wise to contact your local Toyota dealer.
